Been There, Done That

By Stanley Greenfield, RHU
When this year is over, that saying will go down in the books as one of the favorites for this year. When you think about it, that message has a lot to say; it is one that we really need to listen to and follow. I would like to change that message just a little and add another line to it so that it now reads, "Been there, done that, haven't done that." A slight change, but I think it better describes what your particular situation might be. Maybe you have "been there" and "done that," but if you "haven't done that," maybe it's time that you did.

An example of this may be in order at this time. Let's begin with an article that I recently wrote about disability insurance, and received hundreds of letters about. Many not only wrote and requested the names of the companies that are writing policies for chiropractors these days, but some even sent copies of their existing contracts for me to review. I'm glad they did because there are some real "dogs" out there: some are even policies endorsed by some governing body. That governing body may know what a subluxation is, but when it comes to disability contracts, they need to stick to what they know!

How about it? Were you "there?" Did you at least pull out your disability policy and take a look at it? Did you look at the definitions and what you are paying? Did you "do that?" Did you write for the information I offer free of charge? Have you, pardon the expression, "done that?" Or do you fall into the new category that I created just for those who just sit back and let the world go by. If you are part of the "haven't done that" group, there is still time for your to take a look at your policies and ask for the information that I offered. Done that? Okay, then let's move on.

Last year I wrote an article called "Sliced Bread Squared" (October 23, 1995 issue of "DC"). Remember that goody? My mailman had to take a few days off after that article! I got hundreds and hundreds of letters and calls wanting more info and how it would work for them. It seems that many are interested in a way that allows them to put away substantial amounts of money for retirement without getting into the trap of putting away a lot of dollars for their employees. Truly the best thing since sliced bread! One question for you: If you didn't do it and save many thousands of dollars on your last year's tax return, what are you going to do this year? Now that you have "been there," are you going to "do that" or just happily send all your hard earned money to Uncle Sam this year knowing that it's going to be spent for a good cause. NOT! The choice is yours: done that or haven't done that because of brain damage!

Speaking of retirement, have you "been there?" Have you at least started putting some money away into a qualified retirement plan? If so, you have done that and are to be congratulated. If you "haven't done that," what are you waiting for? Time is marching on and leaving you in a pile of dust and all you have to look forward to is a long life of hard work. It's time to "do that" for the person you will be in the future. You owe it to that person. Pick up the pen or the phone and at least take a look at what is available in the qualified plan area. All it can do is save you some tax dollars. Have you "done that?"

Do you have a plan? I'm referring to a financial plan. Many people try to function without a plan and just end up in a financial rut. Maybe it's time to consider setting up an overall plan so you have some goals and a way to achieve them. By the way, I'm talking about more than just planning what you are going to have for dinner tonight! Have you considered doing such a plan? Have you been there? Have you done that? If not, don't you think it's time to do that?

There are always taxes, taxes, taxes. I won't even ask. I know that you have all been there and, I hope, have done that. My question is have you done that too much? In other words, are you paying more than your so-called fair share? You don't know? You need to know.

There is also money, money, money. I hope you are there! Is your money working its hardest for you? You don't know? I'll bet you have statistics on your employees and know who is working the hardest for you, and you turn around and just let your hard earned dollars just run free. I ask you, is that smart? Do you know where to start? Maybe it's time to follow the advice at the end of this article and pick up the pen. After that, you can send me your inquiries with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Many have "been there" and have done just that. The choice is yours. It's time to see the power of the pen!
