Marc S. Micozzi, MD, PhD, director of the National Museum of Health and Medicine, said the conference seeks to inform the general public about health care, while providing an exchange of information among practitioners, scientists, and policy makers. Health care reform issues will also be addressed.
Dr. Redwood will speak on "Chiropractic and the Emerging Holistic Paradigm." Dr. Redwood is a former vice president and legislative chair for the Associated Chiropractors of Greater Washington (the state chiropractic association for the District of Columbia), and is a former Palmer College student body president.
Life Basketball Team Plays in NAIA Tourney
The Life College basketball team, the Running Eagles, made it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament after capturing their second consecutive Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. The Eagles finished the season with a 28-3 overall record and a sixth place national ranking among NAIA schools.
Although the Eagles lost in the second round of their NAIA district tournament, the Life team received one of eight at-large berths to the 32-team NAIA tournament at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri March 16-22, the first chiropractic college team to ever compete in a national tournament.
The Eagles went to Kansas City seeded 13th and promptly defeated their first round opponent, Benedict of South Carolina. That victory was the first ever for a district 25 team in a national tournament.
The Eagle's second round opponent was fourth-seeded David Lipscomb (Tennessee). The Life team lost a close contest, 94-89.
Both of Life's NAIA games were covered by the SportSouth TV Network, and Dr. Sid Williams was interviewed about Life during both halftime shows.
DC Appointed to AAPM Accreditation Advisory Committee
Nestor A. Stychno, DM, DC was recently appointed to the American Academy of Pain Management (AAPM)'s Pain Program Accreditation Advisory Committee. Dr. Stychno's responsibilities include on-site reviews, attendance at advisory committee meetings, and input to the AAPM Board of Directors on such topics as the accreditation process, and classification of pain programs.
Chiro Assoc. of Oregon Offers Computer Bulletin Board
The Chiropractic Association of Oregon (CAO) announces a new computer bulletin board (BBS) that gives up-to-the minute information, and allows users to send or receive messages, files, and public domain software. The BBS is a free service and is open to everyone, even out of state non-CAO members. UCEA Initiates Chiro Program at General Nutrition Center Stores
The United Chiropractic Education Alliance (UCEA) is currently running a program with the General Nutrition Center (GNC), a nationwide health supplement chain, to establish chiropractors in each of their 1400 stores. UCEA Executive Director Tina Boggi said that the goal is to give the public a better awareness of chiropractic treatment, and as a side benefit, increase the patient base of DCs. Trailblazing Chiropractor Turns 90
Gertrude Dunsworth, DC, a 1924 graduate of Minnesota's Midwest College of Chiropractic (later called Ortho College of Chiropractic), celebrated her 90th year April 3rd. One of the first female DCs and the only woman her class of 60 new doctors, she began teaching at Midwest immediately after graduation. She eventually married one of her students, Larry Dunsworth, and they moved to Detroit, Michigan to begin a husband-wife practice. In 1948, the Dunsworths were looking to move to California, and their friend, Alphonse Meyer, was looking for a West Coast distributor for his vitamin business. The Dunsworths settled in Westchester, California and Meyer Distributing Company was born. Presently, Dr. Gertrude Dunsworth enjoys a well-earned retirement in Sun City, California.
