At the American Chiropractic Association's (ACA) Twenty-Seventh Annual Convention in Anchorage of Alaska, June 6-9, several individuals were honored by the association for outstanding performance and contribution to the chiropractic profession.
Honored as the ACA "Chiropractor of the Year," was Shelby Elliott, D.C., whose many years of effort for the inclusion of chiropractic for eligible veterans through the American Legion finally came to fruition last September. The support of a powerful 3.2 million member organization like the American Legion is a significant advancement for the profession in opening future doors to accomplish other programs of like mutual benefit. Dr. Elliott's successful leadership in the campaign for chiropractic inclusion as ACA's Veteran Affairs Chairman was a prime example of this doctor's talent in blending just the right amount of PR finesse with negotiative "muscle."
Special recognition was also awarded Nick Athens, D.C., at the convention for his chiropractic participation in aiding many members of the San Francisco 49ers football team as they slaughtered the Denver Broncos 55-10 in their historic Superbowl victory. An estimated 90 million television viewers watched as super-celebrity, 49er, Joe Montana received his pre-game adjustment. Following the hottest victory in Superbowl history, was a PR bonanza for chiropractic, as reporters from major television networks and USA Today, UPI, Sports Illustrated and dozens of other newspapers clamored around the players and chiropractor, Dr. Nick Athens. It is certain that Dr. Athens has blazed a trail into the sports arena that many DCs (thanks to him) will find easier to follow.
And finally, the ACA Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented to Donald M. Petersen, editor and publisher of Dynamic Chiropractic, "in recognition for services rendered to the chiropractic profession."
All of the awards were accepted by grateful and well-deserved recipients.
