The son of missionaries, he grew up in Burma. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served as an intelligence officer on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's staff in Japan during the postwar occupation. He earned a double degree in chemistry and physics from Butler College in Indianapolis, his doctor of chiropractic at Lincoln Chiropractic College, and his postgraduate degree in chiropractic orthopedics from the Chiropractic Institute of New York.
Dr. Hinton was a four-time president of the Broward County Chiropractic Society and served one term as president of the Florida Chiropractic Association. He was appointed by Gov. Ruben Askew to Florida's Board of Chiropractic Examiners, and was chairman of the accreditation committee of the American Chiropractic Association. Dr. Hinton was recognized by the FCA for his outstanding contributions to the profession, earning "Chiropractic Physician of the Year" in 1965, 1981 and 1999.
Dr. Hinton was a founding editor of the award-winning Gold Coast Chiropractor. He was a baritone for 10 years in the Fort Lauderdale Symphony Chorus, and recently retired from teaching Sunday school at the First Baptist Church of Plantation.
Dr. Hinton is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eiline Hinton; his son, Ken Hinton; daughter, Sandy Johansson; grandson, Bryan Hinton; granddaughters, Lori Hinton and Christina Johannson; sisters Alice Blakely and Edna Ledgard; and a brother, John Hinton.
A memorial service was held July 20, at the First Baptist Church of Plantation. Donations can be made to the Broward County Chiropractic Society (Dr. Herbert E. Hinton Fund) in lieu of flowers. Call 954-255-1029 for information.
