Multi-Million-Dollar Suit Filed against Minnesota DCs

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Five insurers have filed a multi-million-dollar civil suit against five chiropractic clinics, their alleged owners, and four chiropractors for billing for unnecessary treatments, or for services not performed. The insurers are seeking damages in excess of $3 million.

The suit is based on a two-year investigation that alleges the clinics obtained vehicle accident reports, solicited the victims by phone for treatment, and had "cappers" transport the patients to and from the clinics. The cappers were allegedly paid for each patient delivered.

Minnesota was one of the few states without a state insurance fraud investigative unit, but in April 2002, the state legislature passed a law to provide for a fraud unit (effective July 2003). The new law also renders cappers illegal, and went into effect August 1, 2002.
