Dr. Patricia Gayman, acting director of clinic operations and associate dean of chiropractic sciences, has been appointed dean of clinics. She will also serve as acting department chair for philosophy and principles.
Life West Opens Satellite Campus and Expands Clinic
To accommodate the increasing number of students, LCCW recently opened a satellite academic facility, the Bayview campus, to add more space for classrooms and student services. The new campus, which opened January 3rd, is located in Hayward about five miles from the main campus. Approximately 170-180 students -- about 20 percent of the student body -- will be at the Bayview campus at any one time.
The college has also expanded its public clinic, increasing it by 10,000 square feet of additional property, which the college leased to make room for a growing number of senior interns and their patients. The new space includes four classrooms, administrative offices, a testing center, a student lounge, and multiple intern study areas.
Martial Arts Competitor
Life West student and martial art competitor Saeed Kaykha took home five awards from the World Kuk Sool Won tournament held in Houston, Texas this fall. A senior intern at the public clinic, Saeed won first place awards in techniques and weapons, second place awards in forms and self-defense, and third place in demonstration.
Los Angeles College of Chiropractic
Clinical Resident SelectedBrad M.T. Smith, DC, a December graduate of LACC has been selected by the college's residency committee to begin the clinical sciences residency program this month. The program is a three-year postgraduate instruction sequence in chiropractic sciences, leading to eligibility for diplomate status in the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedists (DABCO). There are clinical rotation opportunities provided at the Royal University Hospital at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada and associated clinics in Saskatoon, Canada.
Palmer College of Chiropractic West
Bodybuilding ChampionDr. Phillip Fierro, a recent graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West (PCCW), competed in the North American Bodybuilding Championships, taking first place honors in the men's unlimited and novice divisions.
A member of the 1982 Junior Olympics U.S. wrestling team, Dr. Fierro has only entered three competitions in the past seven years, because of the great time it takes to train for elite-level bodybuilding events. He credits his education over the past three years for giving him the insight and competitive edge to capture the title. Dr. Fierro praised the recent efforts of an increasing number of bodybuilding competitions to curb the steroid problem in the sport by sponsoring natural bodybuilding events, and making drug testing mandatory.
Faculty Contributes to Book on Chiropractic
Palmer West faculty members featured prominently in the editorial contributions to the first edition of Advances in Chiropractic, the latest edition in a series published by the Mosby-Year Book, Inc., the largest health sciences publisher in the world. Dr. William Meeker, PCCW dean of research, served as one of the book's four associate editors.

Faculty AwardsCCCLA faculty members Dr. Lucila Calimag, Dr. Glenn Johnson, and Dr. William Jacobson were recently honored for their outstanding service to the profession. Dr. Calimag was acknowledged for her academic and professional achievements as chair of the diagnosis department the past five years. Dr. Johnson was the recipient of an appreciation plaque recognizing his outstanding his service as the chair of CCCLA's Student Professional Conduct Review Board. Dr. Jacobson, was the first bi-annual recipient of the "Philosophy Award," an award established by CCCLA's Club Chiropractic to honor a doctor of chiropractic for contributions to the profession.
Students Named to Who's WhoThe 1994 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges will include the names of 26 students from CCCLA who are being honored for their national outstanding campus leadership. These students have been chosen based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
