Public Health Opportunity for CCCKC Student
Cleveland Chiropractic College Kansas City (CCCKC) student Rich King was recently named student section chair of the Kansas Public Health Association. King will serve a one-year term with the KPHA.
King is enthusiastic about the opportunity to be involved with the KPHA, particularly with respect to his future career as a doctor of chiropractic. Said King: "I hope to have a health and wellness based practice when I graduate, so I imagine I will be working closely with my state public health association, and this is an opportunity to become familiar with how things work."
British Chiro Association Wins Initial Phase of Libel Case
The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is reporting victory in the first phase of its libel suit filed against Dr. Simon Singh. In April of last year, Dr. Singh published an article in the Guardian newspaper and affiliated online site that stated, among other observations:
"The British Chiropractic Association claims that their members can help treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying, even though there is not a jot of evidence. This organisation is the respectable face of the chiropractic profession and yet it happily promotes bogus treatments."
When Singh refused to retract his comments, which the BCA made clear are "factually wrong, defamatory and damaging to the BCA's reputation," the association began libel proceedings in July 2008.
Nearly a year later, at a May 7, 2009 hearing in the Royal Courts of Justice before Justice David Eady, the judge ruled that what Dr. Singh had written constituted serious defamatory allegations of fact against the BCA. Justice Eady ordered Dr. Singh to pay the BCA's costs of the hearing within 28 days. The trial will conclude later this year.
SCU Faculty Member Wins Prestigious Essay Contest
Garrett Thompson, PhD, assistant professor at the Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU), won first prize in the faculty division of the International Chiropractic Essay Competition. This year's essay contest, offered by ONE Research Foundation, directed participants to address the question of, "Should Chiropractic Academia Embrace the Biopsychosocial Model?"
Dr. Thompson's winning essay, "The Biopsychosocial Model in Academia: Philosophy or Best Practices?" is posted online on the ONE Research Foundation's Web site, www.onefoundation.org. The nonprofit foundation funds peer-reviewed research, with emphasis on expanding the appreciation of neuroemotional technique.
