Dr. Tim Maggs, a sports chiropractor in Schenectady, NY, is excited to announce the purchase of a professional basketball team.
At a news conference Wednesday, The Basketball League (TBL) introduced Dr. Maggs as the sole owner of the Albany Patroons. The Patroons are coming off the 2019 TBL championship and have a rich history. Basketball Hall of Famers Phil Jackson and George Karl are former coaches of the Patroons.
Dr. Maggs hopes to build on the Patroons’ tradition, in part, by introducing his preventative health treatment protocol to the team. The protocol, called the Structural Management program, includes a thorough biomechanical assessment, Chiropractic care, and Foot Levelers custom orthotics.
At a time when overuse injuries are increasing throughout sports, Dr. Maggs’ model of care is focused on pinpointing structural faults to reduce injuries. Dr. Maggs is working with TBL leadership to have every player in the league undergo the exam.
The Structural Management Program is a protocol where the doctor looks at the patient biomechanically, not just pathologically. The exam compiles biomechanical findings so a doctor isn’t solely relying on symptoms to treat patients. The program also includes Chiropractic adjustments, a proactive conditioning program, and Foot Levelers custom orthotics. It also encourages asymptomatic patients to learn about their bodies and proactively work on balancing, conditioning, and preserving themselves.
Maggs' message of preventative care comes at a crucial time. In a two-part series published on ESPN.com in July about the league’s dramatic rise in injuries among young players, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the issue is “the highest priority for the league -- and I think both in terms of the health and wellness of the players in the NBA, but also the larger category of millions of players, boys and girls, not just in the United States, but globally."
Another NBA general manager called the situation “grave” and said there is “no question” there are more orthopedic issues among young players in recent years.
Dr. Maggs’ ownership also comes on the heels of a devastating injury to NBA superstar Kevin Durant, who tore his Achilles tendon shortly after dealing with a calf injury. After the game, Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers said: “The initial injury was a calf injury. This is not a calf injury,” Myers said. “I’m not a doctor, I don’t know how those are related or not, but it’s a different injury.”
Myers’ comments were clearly misguided because the injuries are related. This is another example of why the general public needs to be educated on the importance of biomechanics. Chiropractors are uniquely qualified because the whole body is treated as a unit.
One of Dr. Maggs’ goals is to help educate the general public about how imbalances in the feet can lead to pain and injuries throughout the entire musculoskeletal system. A major tool he uses in his preventative-based model is Foot Levelers custom orthotics, which help correct biomechanical faults.
Dr. Maggs currently works with athletes from more than 25 high schools and is the director of sports biomechanics at Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie, NY. He has also worked with the Chicago Bulls and New York Giants.
Dr. Maggs is also an active speaker for Foot Levelers and helped create Foot Levelers’ Practice Xcelerator program.
