A U.S. representative introduced a bill that would include chiropractors on the Surgeon General’s Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.
More than 6,700 public healthcare professionals serve on the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHS), which fills public leadership posts and in clinical service roles in federal agencies.
U.S. Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, introduced the legislation that would allow for the appointment of chiropractors as officers on the board. With the introduction of chiropractors to the board, the measure would improve the quality of the nation’s healthcare infrastructure through official delivery and research networks, according to the American Chiropractic Association.
“Chiropractic services are already used and highly valued by our nation’s active-duty military and veterans,” said David Herd, president of the American Chiropractic Association. “As the nation continues to struggle with the opioid crisis, H.R. 2202 will allow chiropractors to collaborate with other health care providers in the USPHS Commissioned Corps to bring a wider choice of conservative health care options to the American public. We extend our sincere gratitude to Rep. Green for his work in introducing this very important piece of legislation.”
The bill includes chiropractors in both the USPHS’s regular and reserve corps. The bill requires the President to appoint at least six to the board. The president would consult with the Surgeon General and the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. The corps is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
No chiropractors serve on the board, which is considered an elite team of public health professionals who promote public health and disease prevention promotion within federal agencies. USPHS officers provide a variety of services, including care to members of the U.S. Coast Guard and at community health centers. Corps members are considered members of America’s seven uniformed services, according to Chiropractic Economics, an online chiropractic community.
