Parker College to Award Prestigious Doctorate in Public Service to Economist and Wellness Advocate, Paul Zane Pilzer

DALLAS, TX. - Parker College of Chiropractic is pleased to announce that it will award an honorary Doctorate in Public Service to Paul Zane Pilzer, its commencement speaker. The degree will be awarded during Parker College's 56th commencement ceremony on April 17, 2004 at 1:00 p.m., at the campus of Parker College. Parker College is located at 2500 Walnut Hill Lane, Dallas, Texas, which is at the corner of Walnut Hill and Ables Lane, 2 blocks east of Interstate 35.

Professor Pilzer's commencement address is entitled "Today's Heresy is Tomorrow's Dogma." In his address, Pilzer will explain how throughout history, from the trial of Galileo to modern medicine, science has been turned upside down by new thinking that seemed to be heresy when it was first promulgated. Medicine today is undergoing a similar transformation from treating mostly sickness and the symptoms of disease to prevention and wellness.

Since 1985, Pilzer has been a strong advocate of federal tax parity for wellness versus sickness expenditures. Four of his books have highlighted the economic fallacy of treating only the symptoms of disease, and called for granting consumers a tax-efficient vehicle to spend money on their own wellness and preventative medicine. Thanks to Professor Pilzer and others, beginning 2004, Congress authorized Health Savings Accounts which allow consumers and their employers an annual $5,150 tax deduction/contribution for wellness. In 2003, The New York Times called Pilzer a "wellness guru" and he has been referred to as the "father of health savings accounts."

Professor Pilzer

Paul Zane Pilzer is a world-renowned economist, a multimillionaire software entrepreneur, a college professor and the author of five bestselling books. He has a passion for helping people realize their dreams through business opportunities that improve our world. He is receiving this Honorary Doctorate in Public Service for a lifetime of service and high achievement in academia, business and government.

In academia, Pilzer received his BA from Lehigh University in three years at age 20 in 1974. He received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) in fifteen months at age 22. Pilzer was appointed an Adjunct Professor at New York University at age 24. At NYU, he taught undergraduate, graduate, and law students for twenty consecutive years and received several teaching awards. He has been a Contributing Editor to two economic journals and is the author of more than 50 scholarly publications.

In business, while employed as Citibank's youngest officer at age 22 and its youngest vice president at age 25, Pilzer started several entrepreneurial businesses-earning his first $1 million before age 26 and his first $10 million before age 30. Over the past twenty years, Pilzer has started and/or taken public more than five companies in the areas of software, education and financial services.

In government, Pilzer was an appointed economic advisor in two U.S. presidential administrations where he served his country from Washington to Moscow. He testified before Congress of the impending $200-billion savings and loan crisis years before our elected officials were willing to listen-a story that he later told in his first book, Other People's Money (Simon & Schuster, 1989), which was critically acclaimed by The New York Times and The Economist magazine.

Pilzer's second book, Unlimited Wealth (Crown Publishers, 1991/1993), explained how we live in a world of unlimited physical resources because of rapidly advancing technology, and how one can best prosper in this environment. After reading this book the late Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart, said that he was "amazed at Pilzer's business capacity" and his "ability to put it into layman's terms." Pilzer's methods for predicting and managing technological change have been widely adopted by many of the world's leading corporations.

In his next book, The Theology of Economics--God Wants You To Be Rich (Simon & Schuster, 1995/1997), Pilzer explained how our religious heritage is the foundation of our economic system. This The New York Times business bestseller was featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal and on television shows ranging from 60 Minutes to First Person with Maria Shriver. It has been published in 18 languages.

Pilzer's recent bestsellers, The Next Trillion (VideoPlus, 2001) and The Wellness Revolution (Wiley Press, 2002/2003), expose our trillion-dollar food and medical industries and identify a newly emerging "wellness" industry that will soon occupy an additional one-seventh, or "next trillion," of our economy-an industry in which he predicts the fortunes of the new millennium will be created.

A former commentator on National Public Radio and CNN, Pilzer has appeared three times on the Larry King Live! television program and on the cover of several national magazines. He speaks live each year to approximately 500,000 people, and more than 10 million audio and video copies of his speeches have been sold.

At age 50 today, Pilzer truly personifies the lifestyle he teaches. He lives in the mountains of Utah with his wife, Lisa, and three children, Miriam, Maxwell, and Michael, where they are avid snowboarders, mountain bikers and chess players.
