ROANOKE, Virginia — October 28, 2015 — Since its completion in 1992, the American healthcare profession has been nervously awaiting the implementation of ICD-10, the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), a medical classification list by the World Health Organization (WHO). In Chiropractic circles, there has been much nervous handwringing and chatter about how the new system might impact the profession. Fearful that ICD-10 would be too burdensome, or worse yet, unfairly single out Chiropractic, some practices made the decision to switch to cash only. Unfortunately, a handful of others closed their doors completely.
Well, as of October 1, 2015, ICD-10 is here—and so far, so good. Insurance expert Kathy Mills Chang of KMC University, a Chiropractic consultancy firm that specializes in insurance reimbursement and compliance, posted on her Facebook page: “We're joining one of our KMC University members in a happy dance: Aetna has processed one of their ICD-10 claims and it went through! Anyone else got a claim back yet?” Top comments included “Great on this end!” from Dr. Shelly Kennedy of Kennedy Chiropractic Clinic in Sarasota, FL, and “But of course! Processing is looking good so far!” from Anne Boggs, Office Manager at Boyer Chiropractic in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Foot Levelers reached out to Mills Chang, who is also a Foot Levelers speaker, to ask about what she was seeing in the Chiropractic landscape with regards to 1CD-10. “Essentially it’s just that doctors who did it right, worked with us to learn and implement ICD-10, billed properly and got paid.” It seems the sky may not be falling after all.
Adds Kent S. Greenawalt, Chairman and CEO of Foot Levelers, “Hearing positive comments like the above on the new ICD-10 should help us all look positively towards the future. Remember, the best of us is ahead of us.”
